Surely Felicia had not really heard those words, spoken coldly and anticipating no argument.

If Lord Scarsfeld expected there would not be one, he was greatly mistaken.

‘I beg your pardon?’ She turned about, deliberately taking her time. ‘I am sure you are not referring to this beautiful Christmas tree which your sister and I spent the afternoon decorating.’

He stared at the lovely old ornaments as if they were about to leap from the tree and attack him.

‘Take it down. Put the ornaments back in the attic.’

Clearly he was familiar with the decorations and held some animosity towards them.

‘I will not.’ Whatever his trouble with them was, she suspected it must have to do with something in his past.

As much as she disliked confrontation, she would not let whatever it was that had been done years ago to reach across the years and diminish Abigail’s joy.

Her husband stared at her, quite obviously stunned at her refusal to do his bidding.

‘Of course you will.’ His brows lowered, giving him a dark, fierce expression. No doubt it was the very scowl that gave the impression of his being disagreeable. Which in the moment he was being. ‘I am Scarsfeld, my word is final.’

Of all the ridiculous things she had ever heard spoken, this was near the top of the list. If her sisters could have heard it they would have giggled hysterically. Peter would have blinked in confusion.

‘Perhaps when it comes to the staff, that is true.’ From the corner of her eye Felicia noticed Miss Shirls cover her mouth to hide a—smile? ‘But I am Lady Scarsfeld, by your own decree, might I remind you. I belong here now and I will have a Christmas tree—perhaps two of them.’

‘You have no idea what—’ All of a sudden his gaze shifted to Abigail sitting in a chair, her foot elevated and a bandage wrapped around it. ‘What has happened?’

Wicked Christmas tree apparently forgotten, he rushed to Abigail, going down on one knee to inspect her foot.

‘Have you been hurt?’ he asked even though it was obvious she had been. ‘How did this happen?’

‘I’ve twisted my ankle for the first time ever!’

Felicia thought it might have been easier for Isaiah to accept Abigail’s injury had she not appeared so proud of it.

‘Running on the stairs? Sliding down the banister? I’ve told you not leap off the couch a thousand ti—’

‘She was rescuing Eloise from becoming a hawk’s lunch,’ Felicia blurted out in order to halt Isaiah’s recitation of the ways his sister might have disobeyed him.

‘I caught my foot on a branch hidden under the snow. But you will be relieved to know that Eloise is safe.’

‘You ventured outside in this weather?’ Isaiah’s face grew the shade of a freshly bleached sheet.

Given what he had been through in nearly losing his sister once, she understood how he might feel.

‘We could hardly have cut down a Christmas tree inside the house,’ Abigail pointed out.

A wise and valid point, in Felicia’s opinion.

‘You...’ He spun on his knee, pinning his attention on Felicia.
